Core Meaning

The Judgment: Obstruction: the southwest rewards; the northeast does not. It rewards one to see a great person. Steadfastness brings good fortune.
The Image: Water piled upon the mountain. So the wise person turns inward and shapes their own character.

Water pooling on the mountain, the pass blocked ahead: Jiǎn is obstruction — difficulty that lies in the terrain itself, where pressing forward only wedges you deeper.

Its counsel reverses instinct: going leads into obstruction; coming — turning back — leads to praise, union, and help. Retreat here is intelligent redirection: gather allies, seek the great person's counsel, and use the blocked season for the Image's work — turning inward to shape your own character.

Obstruction in Your Question

Love & Relationships

Jiǎn marks a genuinely blocked passage in a relationship — the conversation that cannot currently be had, the circumstance neither can move. Its counsel: stop pushing at the sealed pass. Come back to yourself, strengthen what you control, and accept help — friends arrive, the fifth line promises, in the midst of the worst of it. Some doors open only after you stop pulling.

Career & Money

Professionally, Jiǎn is the structural obstacle: the frozen market, the immovable stakeholder, the blocked promotion path. Bulling forward wastes the very energy the turn will need. Redirect: build alliances, retool skills, address what in your own preparation the obstruction exposes. The faithful servant beset through no fault of his own — the second line — still serves honorably.

Personal Growth

Inwardly, Jiǎn converts obstacles into curriculum: every blocked path an invitation to turn attention to yourself and mold character. Its distinction matters — this is not defeatism but the recognition that some difficulties are terrain, not tests of force. What you become while blocked is what eventually walks through the opened pass.

The Six Lines

A line speaks only when it is a changing line in your own casting.

Line 1
Going leads into obstruction; turning back earns praise. Wait for the right moment.
Line 2
The faithful servant meets obstruction upon obstruction — through no fault of their own. Duty, not error, demands this struggle.
Line 3
Going leads into obstruction; therefore one turns back, to the joy of those who depend on them.
Line 4
Going alone leads into obstruction; turning back, one finds companions for the harder road ahead.
Line 5
In the midst of the gravest obstruction, friends arrive. The one who persists at the center draws helpers.
Line 6
Going past the trouble into private safety leads nowhere; turning back to face it brings great good fortune. Seek the guidance of the wise.
