Water flowing on through gorge after gorge: Kǎn is the abyss repeated — danger, difficulty doubled, the season when one hard passage opens into another.
Its teaching is water's own conduct: it does not resist the depth, does not lose its nature in falling, fills each hollow honestly and moves on. Sincerity — the heart's success the Judgment names — is the through-line. In danger, do only what the next small step requires, and keep flowing.
問Kǎn appears in a relationship's genuinely hard passage — repeated difficulty that tests the heart's sincerity. Its counsel is water's: stay true to your nature through the gorge, attempt small honest steps rather than grand rescues, and let ceremony go — the fourth line's wine passed plainly through the window is intimacy at its most real.
Professionally, Kǎn is the crisis period with no quick exit: strive only for the achievable small things, its second line says, and do not force breakthroughs from inside the pit. Keep integrity intact through each repetition — reputation is made in gorges. Pause when the way is truly unclear; motion for its own sake deepens the fall.
Inwardly, Kǎn is the practice for dark seasons: constancy of heart when circumstances repeat their blows. Water is the whole curriculum — flexible in form, unchanged in nature, filling every low place without pretending it isn't low. Flow through rather than around, and the abyss itself becomes the teacher of depth.
A line speaks only when it is a changing line in your own casting.
