Water on the earth, flowing together into streams and pooling: Bǐ is union — the deep human need to hold together around a center. Alliances, communities, partnerships, belonging.
Its counsel carries two edges. Choose your center carefully — ask, as its Judgment does, whether what you join possesses greatness, constancy, and endurance. And do not delay: those who hesitate until belonging is convenient arrive after the bonds are formed.
問Bǐ is fundamentally auspicious for connection: it favors commitment, formalizing, and drawing closer. Its two questions remain: is this bond built around something constant, and are you joining wholeheartedly or keeping one foot outside? The hexagram warns specifically against the lateness of the half-committed heart.
Professionally, Bǐ concerns alliances — choosing the team, mentor, partnership, or organization to bind your fortunes to. Evaluate the center, not the perks: the leader's character, the mission's endurance. Once chosen, commit visibly and early. The fifth line's image of a leader who leaves the unwilling free to go also defines good management: loyalty invited, never coerced.
Inwardly, Bǐ asks what your life is organized around, since a self also holds together — or fails to — around its center. If your days feel scattered, the question is not more effort but a truer center. Choose one worth the devotion, and let the smaller loyalties order themselves around it.
A line speaks only when it is a changing line in your own casting.
